Cracked or Loose Siding Before Winter: What to Do

Re-caulking joints and swapping a single vinyl panel is realistic homeowner work. Matching material and color across a wall, repairing sheathing or house wrap, and anything above the first story is contractor work.

Caulking and single-panel repairs are low cost. Re-siding a wall is moderate; a whole-house replacement is a major project.
Repair or replace?
Repair when damage is limited to a few panels and the wall behind is dry. Replace when damage is widespread, panels are brittle with age, color no longer matches, or moisture has reached the sheathing.

Water that gets behind siding does not dry out. It rots sheathing and framing, feeds mold inside the wall cavity, and is usually only discovered when the repair is already large.
